Cambridge Folk Festival

As I said in the previous entry, I didn't take any pics of the artists apart from Seasick Steve. The rest of the time I was either too far away or too busy dancing! So this entry is just a few pics taken around the festival site. Considering the wet summer we've had in the UK this year and the fact that large swathes of the country have been underwater we were lucky with the weather at Cambridge. Only rained on Saturday night and we managed to get into the marquee to see Joan Baez and bop along to Toots and the Maytals. It was a bit muddy on the Sunday but not as bad as Womad (held on the same weekend) where the ground seems to have turned into mud soup!

Video clips of the festival are here if you're interested.
Probably my favorite band (and a new discovery) was Le Vent du Nord. Quebecois traditional music. Been dancing along to their cd ever since we got back.
Also enjoyed:
Joan Baez - still going strong, superb voice
Toots and the Maytals - been a fan of theirs for a while
Ricky Scaggs
Martin Simpson
CJ Chenier
Nancy Griffith
probably more I've forgotten...
and the beer...
Life after my PhD is FUN

Seasick Steve

Spent the weekend at the Cambridge Folk Festival. Great music but the only artist I managed to photograph was the original hobo bluesman Seasick Steve. Check out his website and catch him if you can.

Spent the evening at the Chinese State Circus in Highbury Fields. Superb. More to come.

Not a lot of time to spend here at the moment as my PhD viva's (oral exam) scheduled for Wednesday the 13th - only 10 days away. Need to revise...

Photo challenge #148: Religion

Hare Krishna - food for all.
Who says there's no such thing as a free lunch?
On the other hand there's always a long queue so if you believe that time is money I suppose you could say the cost is the time you spend standing in line.
The British are supposed to be a nation of queuers. Personally I prefer the Cuban approach to queueing. Find the last person in the queue - "Quien es el ultimo?" - and then go and wait somewhere comfortable and shady until it's your turn.

Malet St Gardens

View all 8 photos...
Bloomsbury, the area around London University where I work, is full of squares and gardens. I'm taking a walk every lunchtime to try out my new Nikon D80 - I've had it a week now and still getting used to it. Flexibility = complexity? The manual has become my essential bed and breakfast-time reading!
I'm also really busy at work and my computer needs more memory... Excuses, excuses, no sooner am I back than I seem to be about to disappear again. It's not for want of new photos, it's for want of time to post them...

So, today I bring you Malet St Gardens. A sunken garden opposite Senate House and just behind the British Museum. Really just grass surrounded by plane trees but shady quiet and peaceful. Although there's a notice at the entrance that says it is a private garden and not open to the public there's actually nothing to stop anyone from wandering in for a quiet sit-down. The University Police (joking) are not in evidence to turf you out. Even if they were I wouldn't have to worry as I have the right credentials!

Great photos Jenny! I loved the 7th best. Great shot. In a few more try outs you will be free of the manual. However, they have so many features that I still carry my D40 one inside the camera bag! From time to time I have to look after for some help... Thanks for you comments! Sun 27-May-2007 22:56
