Venice - the Islands

Coming into Murano

Coloured houses, Burano

Our second day in Venice was spent visiting the islands in the lagoon - Murano (the glass island), Burano (the lace island) and Torcello (the tranquil island).
Unfortunately the campanile in Torcello was closed for renovations so we were deprived of the views across the lagoon from the top - yet another reason to go back to Venice...

Seemed like an interesting juxtaposition.

Yesterday we walked about 7 mls from the start of the Hertford Union Canal where it branches off the Lee Navigation at Hackney Wick up to the Regent's Canal and on to Kentish Town Lock (just before Camden).
I was surprised to see so much algae on the Lee Navigation (pic 1). The Hertford Union, just round the corner, was clear though as you can see from pic 2. Pic 6 shows the entrance to the mile-long tunnel near the Angel. We had to divert to the road for this section and rejoin the canal on the other side.

Romance... atmosphere... uniqueness...
Venice has all this and more because of its canals.

Looking up in Venice

Venice was hot (around 38C) and crowded but what else would you expect at the end of July? I've been told it's nice in January... This was my second visit anyway so I was happy just to wander around without spending hours queueing for things.

I seemed to take a lot of photos looking up. That was one way to avoid getting a pic full of people!

We started in Nice

Just back from a 15-day journey by train across Europe to Istanbul. My new Sigma 18-200 lens was the perfect travelling companion and I managed to take around 900 pics. Will be posting a selection over the next few days (or weeks...)
After a fortnight of temperatures in the high 30s it was a bit of a contrast to arrive back at Heathrow yesterday afternoon to grey, wet, cold London. And it's still raining today although there have been what the weather forecast would refer to as sunny intervals. Nevertheless it's still over 10 degrees colder...

We started our trip by travelling on Eurostar and TGV to Nice. Here's a selection from the sunny Cote d'Azur!

Wow ~ a lot of people on the beach! I have been enjoying watching your travels. Thanks for sharing. Thu 14-Aug-2008 19:53

Gaudi connections

Looking out to the Sagrada Familia from the roof of La Pedrera

I agree with you, the line is indeed very fine, tenuous... Can you imagine his relationship with the people that translated his visions to masonry ? Wed 4-Jun-2008 13:33

The Sagrada Familia. That song by the Alan Parsons Project. Sadly, I don't know the history Thu 5-Jun-2008 12:42

Reflecting on the Sagrada Familia

The Gaudi pics from yesterday and today were both taken in La Pedrera, one of the residential buildings in Barcelona designed by Gaudi and built between 1906-1910. Margo, you can find out more about it from the link and I will also be posting more pics.
Still more Gaudi to come but I'm probably only going to manage one pic a day for the rest of this week as I'm busy at work now that I'm back.

This one is a model of the Sagrada Familia (Temple of the Holy Family, also designed by Gaudi) placed on top of a mirror so that the ceiling above is reflected below.

To answer Click's comment from yesterday, a genius certainly and I would say a visionary rather than a madman. (But there's a fine line, consider William Blake, for example.)

Thanks. I'm a Gaudi-fan. Last year I visited Barcelona (blowup.fotopages.com) and La Padrera, Park Guell etc. Your 'I spy' is a very interesting shot! Tue 3-Jun-2008 18:31
