Roman Baths, Trier
|
|
I'm still sorting out the photos I took on my trip to Germany and taking more in London at the same time.
Today it's back to Germany with a set taken at the Kaiserthermen (Roman Imperial Baths) built in Trier at the end of the second century. Trier is the oldest city in Germany and was an imperial capital of Constantine the Great, the first Christian Roman Emperor.
More Roman remains still to come...

“East End Pubs make way for the Olympics”, proclaimed the Evening Standard in November 2007.
We're certainly encountering a few of them on our walks around that area.

Photo Challenge #183: Road or Passage
|
|
Here's some pics from our last couple of Capital Ring walks that fit this theme.
#1 is the path leading from the Lee Navigation up to the Greenway - an almost completely flat and straight path that runs for 4.4 miles across East London from Hackney Wick to Beckton. It's constructed on top of the Northern Outfall Sewage Embankment that goes to the Sewage Works in Beckton. Reportedly smelly at times but perhaps that's worse in the hot weather as we only got the occasional whiff. It also runs bang through the middle of the Olympics redevelopment site and is just about the only public access route through there at the moment.
#2 is the rather grim tunnel under Marshgate Lane. But not as bad as it used to be. The Greenway can't cross this point because of railway lines.
#3 the alley back on to the Greenway after the tunnel.
The blue fencing in both these pics is the barracade around the Olympic site.
#4 After leaving the Greenway, you go over a footbridge across the busy A13 with the Beckton Alps in the distance. This is the slag heap left from the former Beckton Gas Works, closed when we went over to natural gas in the early '70s.
#5 taken as we walked under the flyover outside Royal Albert DLR station at the start of the Beckton to Woolwich section.
#6 the Sir Steve Redgrave bridge curves gently over the George V Dock. This is under the flight path of London City Airport - the jetty up the middle of the dock is the runway.

Trying to keep up a post a day...
Back to London with these chimenys taken from the Greenway near Stratford (that's Stratford E. London, not Stratford on Avon of Shakespeare fame btw).

Volklingen Ironworks
|
|
Back to Germany and industrial heritage.
The Volklingen Ironworks, founded in 1873 and once one of the most important Iron and steel works in Europe were closed in 1986 and are now a UNESCO World Heritage Site - the only intact example of a 19th/20th century iron works in Western Europe or North America. Spectacular. A sculpture in steel and highly photogenic. I certainly recommend a visit. Renate knew I would enjoy it so we went together while I was visiting her.

Garage
|
|
From the sublime to the.... as I continue interspersing pics of London with pics from Germany.
This garage is in Hackney Wick. It was open when we passed it on our way to the station at the end of our previous walk, late on a Saturday afternoon, but closed this time on a Sunday. Soon it will be closed forever. There's something fascinating about urban decay. Particularly here on the fringe of the Olympic redevelopment site in an area that will be regenerated beyond recognition by 2012.
