Photo Challenge #180: Building

More post-industrial dereliction on the banks of the Lee Navigation.

Am I here or not?
Posting has been a bit sporadic of late. First of all there seemed to be a problem with fotopages and I couldn't upload. Then that fixed itself but I had major (largely self-inflicted) problems with my computer. Fortunately I didn't lose any photos but it took me a while to get things up and running again. Now it seems to be all systems go and I have a lot of pics to post so hope to be posting fairly regularly. We shall see...

Remember Lesney?

The former matchbox toy factory on the west bank of the Lee Navigation in Hackney. The Lesney Toy Company went into receivership in 1982. The building now appears (from looking at it across the canal) to be largely derelict although it's still used as the operations base for Lesney Industries Ltd, a die-casting and plastic injection moulding operation.

Its future is uncertain. A planning application to demolish it and replace with a mixed commercial and residential development was turned down last month but is to be the subject of a planning enquiry in April. Whatever the outcome, it seems unlikely that it will be there much longer as it's right opposite the Olympics development site and all eyesores within view of the Olympics will surely be removed before 2012.

Boat
Birds
Beach

[This is also my entry for Photo Challenge #162: Sea]

We started out along the beach in Doñana. Our guide told us that these boats were fishing too close to the shore but were unlikely to be caught as the coastguards had such a long stretch of coast to patrol and the fishermen would warn each other when they were approaching so that they could move further out.

My 70-300 VR lens certainly came into its own on this trip. The birds were often a long way away and some of my shots had to be taken from a moving vehicle!

Difficult to find much time to post at the moment as I'm back at work and have so many pics from Spain to sort out as well as new ones I'm taking in London...

...in Doñana National Park, Andalucia, Spain. (Donana is Spanish and should have a tilde over the first 'n' - does anyone know how you put characters like that in these entries?)

Update: Thanks to Click I have fixed the missing tilde in Doñana

What we saw coming next.

Pigmoor Dawn August 2007

I'd been meaning to post this series taken while I was in Cornwall for some time. Must have been waiting for this challenge...

I woke up early one morning and this was the sight that greeted me when I pulled back the curtain in the caravan. I just had to pull on a fleece over my pyjamas, stick my feet into some crocs, grab my camera and race up to the top of the hill behind us. Spent about half an hour photographing this spectacular and ever-changing sky...

Was just browsing through you photos and came across the Cornwall dawn ones. Spectacular and to think the rest of us slept through it all! Mon 19-Nov-2007 09:46
