A Royal return

The Princess and the Master

View all 5 photos...
Back from Spain last night and back to work today. On my return I discovered that the Princess Royal - Princess Anne - was visiting to open the new Centre for Learning and Professional Development at Birkbeck. Only the college bigwigs were invited of course but I did manage to get a good shot of her walking with the Master of the college - Prof David Latchman in the square outside the entrance. It was more fun taking pics of the accompanying Police entourage...

Should I confess that actually I'm a republican? Or am I risking being sent to the Tower as a traitor? On the other hand, I wouldn't have fancied Tony Blair for president, he was messianic enough as it was...

Pics of my trip to Spain coming soon. (And maybe more from Cornwall...)

Fly Me!

Taken over Russell Square today.
"Sale now on," says the banner. Hope this doesn't mean you have to fly all the way to Australia by helicopter!

(This would have been a good subject for my new lens but I just take the 18-70 kit lens with me for everyday use.)

New Lens

young blackbird
Just bought a new lens 70-300 VR as recommended by Click and a lot of other reviews. Haven't had much time to try it out yet but hoping for plenty of opportunity for nature, wildlife and bird pics on my upcoming trip to Spain.
This one was taken from my kitchen window.

Wow! I see that you are liking it! Wed 12-Sep-2007 12:18

The Warriors are coming!

Really looking forward to this exhibition. It starts next week but I haven't got time to go before I go to Spain a week on Monday. Anyway, it's probably better to wait until the initial rush has subsided and it runs until next April.
I tend to take the British Museum for granted as it's right next door to Senate House where I work and I often use it as a cut-through. Its general exhibits are free but special exhibitions have an entry fee. It's £12 to see the terracotta warriors. I'll let you know whether it was worth it once I've seen them.
(See Rajiv's comment on 1st September)

They are beautiful! I had the chance of seeing them before! Do not miss it! Mon 10-Sep-2007 12:18

Industrial Heritage

View all 6 photos...
The moors in Cornwall are full of the remnants of its industrial past. These are old clay workings at Baker's Pit, a few minutes walk from Pigmoor where we were staying. The lake is an old clay pit that has been flooded. It's deep and dark in the middle, literally unfathomable. My friend's brother's wife swims there nearly every day. I didn't fancy it, probably because it reminded me of the song 'Lakes of Champlain' that I've been listening to a lot lately on the latest Martin Simpson album
'Prodigal Son'
. "There's deep and false waters in the Lakes of Champlain...". And anyway I didn't have my swimming costume and although it was isolated enough it was too cold for skinny dipping...

I shiver in fright just thinking about swimming in the false waters of a cold, unfathomable, deep, dark, flooded, industrial clay pit lake in the M RS of Cornwall... Thu 6-Sep-2007 12:33

Greetings from St Ives

If I'd wanted a pic like this I could've just bought a postcard. But, as they say, why keep a dog and bark yourself? Anyway I had to do something to pass the time while we were hanging around waiting for the train to take us back to the car in St Erth.

This place looks like fun. The terracotta warriors are fascinating. Apparantly, there's a huge hill in Xi'An, which has not been excatavated yet. The terracotta warriors were the army of Emeror Qin Shi Huang in the afterlife. I wonder what they will uncover when they excavate that hill. China is fascinating. You should visit it some day. Tavistock Gardens #2: Gandhi - a park dedicated to peace

View all 4 photos...

The centrepiece of the square is a magnificent statue of Gandhi. There's also a tree planted in memory of the victims of Hiroshima and a stone commemorating conscientious objectors. All in all a park dedicated to peace which makes it all the more ironic that it was in the street running alongside Tavistock Square where the bus was blown up in the 2005 bombings.
